Faith Jones Workshops

Workshops & classes are held throughout the year for both adults and children. Due to my busy schedule, I have limited classes to one-to-one/groups of up to 5 tuition where you are able to choose course dates that suit you. Simply email me at info@faithjones.co.uk or call 07737072752 to enquire about availability. Group bookings are however available upon request- your entire group gets 10% off if you book together. Full payment must be made to book your place- places go very quickly and are allocated on a first come, first serve basis. Bookings are non-refundable once booked and paid for.

If there is something specific you would like to learn or create that is not detailed in my brochure, please just ask me! I am always happy to help and make things possible!

Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided during every session. Lunch will only be provided for full day courses (5 hours or more). You must inform me of any dietary requirements or food allergies upon booking.

Skill Course 1: THE BASICS (one day course)

Price £180

Pull your sleeves up and get ready to have some fun! We will be making a novelty cake that I design especially for you. You will learn how to carve a yummy chocolate cake, flavour and fill it with a gorgeously delicious buttercream, and cover it with fondant. I will show you how to avoid air bubbles in your fondant and get really smooth finish. We will also go through how to cover different shaped cakes. You also learn how to stack more than one cake on top of another and the types of support systems you need to know for bigger cakes. We then move onto colouring our own fondant, handmade decorations, using silicone moulds and piping a message by hand on to a plaque you've made yourself and attaching it to our cakes! As this is a one to one class, I can also show you how to use an air spray machine on your cake to give it an extra dimension of colour (if time allows)

 

Skill Course 2: FOUNDATION SUGAR FLOWERS (3 day course)

Price £360 for 3 days

10am-4pm

You will learn how to fill, cover & stack a 2 tiered cake ready to be decorated.

You will also learn how to work with flowerpaste (I will show you how to make your own and which brands have a good quality ready made paste). We then move on to making flowers by hand out of flower paste: roses, sweet peas, carnations, peonies and wisteria- we will see how many we have time for- it depends how fast you are! After letting the flowers dry overnight, I will show you how to professionally dust your flowers, steam them to hold the colour, and then how to professionally wire them using professional florist techniques. You will then assemble them on your cake and I will go through different techniques to do this also. We will pipe on to our cake with royal icing to create a lace effect as a border around the base of each tier. To finish, we will embellish our cake with edible pearls.

ADDITIONAL OPTION: you may add an extra day to this course to learn how to use fresh edible flowers for cake decorating. You will learn how to source & select your flowers, ensure they are safe to use, design a fresh flower cake, ensure they stay fresh (and alive!), how to cut fresh flowers, tape and wire them into a spray, assemble them onto a cake and also how to make a fresh flower arrangement around a cake to compliment sugar flowers you make in the 3 previous days.


Skill Course 3: FOUNDATION HAND PIPING ROYAL ICING OR BUTTERCREAM & HANDMADE FONDANT FLOWERS (2 day course)

£180 per day

You will learn how to cover a two tier cake with royal icing/buttercream in preparation to pipe on it. I will show you how to make royal icing from scratch and/or buttercream that is perfect for piping. The preparation technique depends on what you want to do on the cake so I will show you my personal tricks! You will learn how to make royal icing/buttercream of different consistencies depending on what you want to do with it. If you are working with buttercream, you will learn how to make American buttercream and French meringue buttercream (this is an advanced technique where you melt the egg whites and sugar together over heat! The buttercream becomes shiny like silk and so light to eat!) I will show you different hand piping techniques that you can use on your cake to compliment your flowers. You will also learn how to layer different piped designs to create the illusion of a bigger cake. If time allows, I will show you how to do suspension string work on your cake too, to create a hanging lace effect.

 

Skill Course 4: FOUNDATION WORKING WITH CHOCOLATE (1 day course)

INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED AVAILABLE (includes advanced techniques and sculpting and carving chocolate! Please request further details if interested)

Make sure you make lots of mistakes in this course-…because you get to eat ALL your mistakes!!! You will learn a bit about the chemistry of chocolate, its origins and how to tell the difference between various chocolate available on supermarket shelves- how do you know which one to buy for what? You will then learn how to temper chocolate without a thermometer in the microwave. Next, we make hand piped and rolled truffles and how to infuse chocolate with exciting flavours. You also learn how to work with professional grade chocolate moulds out of polycarbonate and how to prepare them for professional results. You will use these moulds to make moulded chocolates and bars. I will also show you how to pipe with chocolate.

 

INTERMEDIATE SKILL CLASS (2 days):

You will learn: how to make handmade chocolate flowers, cigarillos & fans. Also, you will learn how to cover a chocolate ganache cake with chocolate fondant & decorate with handmade chocolate ruffles. How to make pralines filled with crème and runny salted caramel.

 

ADVANCED SKILL CLASS (2-3 days)

(price on application)

You will learn how to carve a 3D chocolate sculpture and figurines/decorative objects. This is like carving stone except using chocolate!

  

Course 5: INTRODUCTION TO BOILED SUGAR ART (PULLING & BLOWING)

£395 for 2 days

This is where things get really hot!!! Get ready to transform into a nutty professor in a sugar laboratory! You will learn the basics of sugar pulling and blowing: equipment, set up, chemistry, safety & ingredients. You will be shown how to prepare sugar and isomalt for pulling and blowing. You will learn how to make flowers, baubles, hearts, cake boards (casting), ribbons. I will also demonstrate how to make bubble sugar which can be wonderful and fun to use on cakes! You of course get to take home everything you make- don’t tell your dentist you’re booking this course!


COURSE PROJECTS 

Course projects allow you to focus on more than one skill set (e.g. advanced piping and embellishments) by applying it to a specific themed cake project.

 

TITLE: Jungle Cupcakes! (for kids)

TIME: 10.30am - 1.30pm (3 hours)

DURATION: half day project

PRICE: £35 per child

DESCRIPTION: Put on your safari outfits and let's get ready to rumble! Accompanied by jungle themed music and sounds, you will learn how to core and fill your six cupcakes with exciting flavours (buttercream and chocolate M&Ms, buttercream and jam, buttercream and mini-marshmallows). Next you will learn how to cover your cupcakes with a fondant disk and make the following animal faces out of fondant: a roaring lion, a stripy zebra, a cheeky monkey, a naughty elephant, a sneaky snake and a greedy crocodile! All equipment provided and the cake is yours to take home with a certificate of achievement. Parents are of course welcome to be present throughout the project.

 

TITLE: Handpainting & Embroidering Sugar Cookies

TIME: 10.30am- 2.30pm

DURATION: one day

PRICE: £100

DESCRIPTION: By the time you are finished with these cookies, these beauties will be ready to be framed, not eaten! You will learn how to make & colour royal icing. You will also learn how to prepare royal icing to various consistencies depending on what you want to use it for. Next you will flood your cookies with the icing and learn various flooding and icing techniques. To finish, you will learn how to hand paint on to your cookies, create relief sugar work as well as embroider and pipe using various techniques. As a bonus, I will talk about shelf life and how to present your cookies to give them that extra special touch. All equipment provided and the cake is yours to take home with a certificate of achievement.

 

TITLE: Marshmallow Madness Cake Project (for kids!)

TIME: 10.30am - 1.30pm (3 hours)

DURATION: half day project

PRICE: £35

DESCRIPTION: Who ever dreamed of marshmallows shooting out of a cake like fireworks? I know I have! You will learn how to decorate a small two tier cake with a fountain of mini and mega sized marshmallows. To add extra fun and madness, you will learn how to make the marshmallows look like they are shooting out of the cake like fireworks into the sky in all directions! To finish, we will add sparkle and extra colour to our marshmallows using edible sugar decorations that will wow all your friends at school! All equipment provided and the cake is yours to take home with a certificate of achievement. Parents are of course welcome to be present throughout the project.

  

TITLE: Flower Pot Cake Project (includes air spraying your cake with edible colour!)

TIME: 10am- 4pm

DURATION: 3 day project

PRICE: £325

DESCRIPTION: Don't really have a green thumb? Do you love gardening but end up killing all your flowers? Your worries are over as you will be creating your own beautiful edible flower garden without all the hassle of watering and waiting! You will learn how to carve a chocolate cake, fill it with chocolate ganache, stack and support it so it doesn't fall over. We will then crumb coat it with buttercream and cover with fondant. You will learn how to air spray your cake with edible colour and give your flower pot a 'terra cotta' clay look. Then comes the pretty bit- I will show you how to create beautiful, handmade flowers out of flower paste and fondant (roses, carnations, trailing wisteria, daisies, peonies, sweet peas to name a few). If there is a particular flower you want to learn to make that I haven't mentioned, please let me know when you book your place in advance. Lastly, we will dust with colour and assemble our gorgeous flower arrangement in our flower pots for you to take home! All equipment provided and the cake is yours to take home with a certificate of achievement.

 

TITLE: 'Under the Sea' Cake Project (including air spraying your cakes with edible colour!)

TIME: 10am – 4pm

DURATION: 2 day project

PRICE: £180 per person

DESCRIPTION: Get your flippers on and be ready to dive under the sea! You will learn how to fill, stack and cover a cake with buttercream and fondant ready to be air sprayed with edible colour. You will also learn how to cover a cupcake with fondant and support the cake to ensure it doesn't fall over! Next, you will learn an array of different skills, including air spraying a cake, piping corals with royal icing, painting fish on to a cake with edible paint, making shells and sea stars by hand and glossing them to look real, creating and decorating an octopus on top of your cake. To finish off our masterpiece, we will decorate our cake boards with edible sand! All equipment provided and the cake is yours to take home with a certificate of achievement.

 

TITLE: Show Stopping Vintage Cake Project

TIME: 10am – 4pm

DURATION: 2 days

PRICE: £199

DESCRIPTION: Diamonds are a girl's best friend? No! Pearls, swirls and lace are (and a few diamonds if you insist)! You will learn how to fill, layer and crumb coat a cake with buttercream and support a double height cake to ensure it doesn't fall over. Next we will colour and cover it with fondant. We will then decorate our double height single tier cake using different mediums and techniques, such as intricately piping royal icing to look like lace, stenciling with lustre dusts, embroidering with pearls, cutting and embellishing vintage style brooches and plaques, giving our cakes an antique vintage look and painting onto our cakes by hand. All equipment provided and the cake is yours to take home with a certificate of achievement.


TITLE: Vogue Wedding Cake Project

TIME: 10am – 4pm

DURATION: 2 day project

PRICE: £249

DESCRIPTION: Do you have a friend's wedding coming up soon? Are you perhaps getting married? Or did you always just dream of being able to create a stunning wedding cake? You will be creating a small 3 tier wedding cake with a ball of fresh flowers as the centre tier. You will learn how fill, stack and cover your cakes. You will also learn how to support your tiers to ensure they don't fall over. Then we will move on to piping techniques, embroidering your cake and working with lustre dusts and edible embellishments (including handmade flowers). The second part of the project will focus on working with fresh flowers: how to source and select flowers, wire them, tape their stems and arrange them onto the centre sphere. Special attention will be paid to how to transport the cake, preparation timings and how to select and bake the correct type and texture cake. All equipment provided and the cake is yours to take home with a certificate of achievement.

 

TITLE: Asian Wedding Cake Project

TIME: 10am- 4pm

DURATION: 2 day project

PRICE: £249

DESCRIPTION: Are you or a friend perhaps getting married soon or you just have a love for intricate, artistic design with lots of gold, silver and sparkle? Then this is the class for you. You will learn how to fill, stack and cover a small two tier cake. You will also learn how to support your tiers to ensure they don't fall over. Then we move on to the show stopper: you will learn to colour your own fondant to the colour you wish, and cascade our sugar veil down and around your tiered cake to look like mesmerizing veil material. Next we move on to detailed hand piping techniques, painting onto our cakes with edible paint, royal icing and metallic gold colour. You will also create relief sugar work around your cakes and learn how to air spray metallic lustre colours to give your designs that extra sparkle. All equipment provided and the cake is yours to take home with a certificate of achievement.

  

TITLE: Vintage Birdcage Cake Project

TIME: 10am- 4pm.

DURATION: 2 days

PRICE: £249

DESCRIPTION: I'm all for pets but not really in cages. No need to feel bad with this gorgeous bird in a cage then! You will learn to carve, fill and stack a cake. You will also learn to support your cake to ensure it does not fall over. Next, you will learn to cover it with fondant. Then you move on to piping skills with royal icing, sugar relief work, silicone mould work with fondant. Last but not least you will learn to create edible paint and how to apply this to paint a gorgeous bird of your choice on to your cake. To finish we will add 3D butterflies to your cake and edible gold or silver metallic paint. This cake will really be a handmade showpiece to wow all your friends and family with! Also suitable as a wedding cake! All equipment provided and the cake is yours to take home with a certificate of achievement.
